On Monday February 3, we will organize our next monthly lecture! Every month we touch upon another, often hot, topic with interesting speakers. We have been able to welcome ministers and professors, politicians and scientists and many more. These lectures are often visited by both members and non-members as they are accessible to all.

This time, we are organising our lecture around the topic of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals SDGs. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were born at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro in 2012. The objective was to produce a set of universal goals that meet the urgent environmental, political and economic challenges facing our world. The SDGs replace the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which were aimed at starting a global effort in 2000 to tackle the indignity of poverty. Whereas the MDGs were viewed as a development project of poor countries to be helped by richer countries, the SDGs are framed to be universal and have an ambitious transformative agenda. However, there is also a lot of scepticism around the goals and indicators, not in the last place because they do not mention political reform and human rights.

During this lecture, we are going to look into the background and history of the Sustainable Development Goals. We will also take a look at the results and prospects five years down the road. How far have we come already and what actions should we still take? How are the SDGs measured and where does the data originate from? And how realistic is it that we will actually achieve the goals by 2030 if no country is yet on track? These, more, and of course your own questions will be answered during the lecture.

After the lecture, there is a Q&A session with the speakers. The speakers will be announced in the Facebook event later.
